Video player

A html5 video player, built into your site with no plugin and no library. A YouTube, Vimeo or self-hosted video behind your own poster and play button, in place or in a lightbox. Nothing is requested from YouTube or Vimeo until the button is pressed; then a privacy-enhanced iframe is created and focus moves into it.

YouTube, in place

Big Buck Bunny © Blender Foundation, peach.blender.org, CC BY 3.0. Nothing loads from YouTube until you press play.

Self-hosted, with captions

Native controls: turn captions on from the player's menu.

Lightbox, custom play icon

Opens over the page from 0:30. Escape or the close button stops it.

You'll need to give us

  • The video: a YouTube or Vimeo link, or the fileNeeded to start
  • A still image to show before it plays, if you have oneWithout one we use a frame from the video.
  • Captions or a transcript, if you have themNeeded for a video file we host. YouTube and Vimeo carry their own.

Send these with your request and we can start straight away. Everything else is ours to do.

Your video, your thumbnail, and nothing loads from YouTube until someone presses play.

What it replaces

  • PowerPack / UABB / Elementor video modules
  • raw YouTube/Vimeo iframes
  • lite-youtube-embed
  • video lightbox plugins

Good for

A video people choose to watch: an explainer on a service page, a testimonial, a tour of the premises.

Not for

Ambient loops behind a hero (that is video-background) and autoplay with sound, which no page of ours ever does.

Accessibility

Written so the page works for every visitor, whether they browse with a mouse, a keyboard or a screen reader, and whether or not they have asked for less motion.

  • The play button is a real <button> named “Play: <title>”, over the whole poster; Tab reaches it and Enter or Space plays. The poster image has its own alt text.
  • In place, focus moves into the player on play: the iframe (titled with the video’s title) or the <video>. The keyboard then drives the player itself.
  • Self-hosted video keeps the browser’s native controls: keyboard operable, with a captions menu for `tracks`. A captions track is expected because a video with speech and no captions fails WCAG 1.2.2, and the build warns without one.
  • Lightbox: a native modal <dialog> named with the title, so focus is trapped and Escape closes it; the close button is labeled and a backdrop click closes too. On open the video starts and focus goes to the close button, because a YouTube or Vimeo iframe keeps every key, Escape included; Tab moves on into the player. Closing removes the iframe or pauses the file, so sound never continues behind it, and returns focus to the play button. The page does not scroll underneath.
  • Nothing plays until the visitor asks, so there is no autoplay to pause. prefers-reduced-motion only removes the play button’s hover growth.
  • Without JavaScript a file plays through its native controls, and YouTube, Vimeo and the lightbox offer a plain link to watch the video where it lives.

How to ask for it

“The video-player on our home page, with …”

Name it, say which page and which part of the page it goes on, and say what goes in it: your photos, your words, your colors. That is a complete request. We build it, you approve it, and it goes live. If you know it by another name, from WordPress or from another site, that works too.

More elements you can ask for: Before / After, Particle field, Mega menu, Video background, Parallax band, Scroll reveal, Business hours, News ticker, Flip box, Instagram feed, Accordion / FAQ, Card slider, Tabs, Info list, Testimonial carousel, Icon library, Animated text, Cookie consent, Animated background, Modal box, Announcement bar, Image hotspots, Info circle, Slide box, Countdown, Content toggle, Off-canvas panel, Video gallery, Map and directions, Link effects, Tabcordion, Tooltip, Responsive table, Notice, Toast, Loading, Menu button, Radio group, Stepper, Tags, Scrollbox, Sticker. Or see all of them working.

  • Testimonial carousel

Let what your clients say move gently across the page, without anyone losing a quote halfway through reading it.

  • Icon library

Find the icon, copy its name, put it in a request — it arrives as one crisp inline SVG, not a 300 KB font.

  • Video gallery

All your videos on one page, sorted by topic, with your own thumbnails, and nothing loads from YouTube until someone picks one.

  • Before / After

Show the old and the new in one frame, and let visitors drag to compare.
